John Mayer: 'Guitar Hero Fans Are Fake Wannabes'

Jennifer Aniston's new man takes a dig at the game...

Thursday 05th Jun 2008

John Mayer is not a fan of the game Guitar Hero, because he thinks it makes it easy for untalented people to pretend they are good at playing the instrument.

Jennifer Aniston’s bitter new man claims no game could ever match the enjoyment gained from playing the axe for real.

He tells Rolling Stone: "Guitar Hero was devised to bring the guitar-playing experience to the masses without them having to put anything into it.

“And having done both, there's nothing like really playing guitar. I mean, what would you rather drive, a Ferrari or one of those amusement-park cars on a track?"

He may be able to play a guitar, but that doesn’t mean his songs are any good.

Find out what The Jonas brothers had to say about Guitar Hero here.

Poll  Is John Mayer being pedantic?

Yes - He should stop whining

No - It's true, real guitar is more satisfying

I don't know

  • Has John Mayer actually played Guitar Hero? In my view it absolutely does not "bring the guitar-playing experience to the masses" - it's a videogame and doesn't pretend to be anything more than a vague approximation of guitar playing

  • Hey John, want to make fun of gamers and their interests? Lets talk about your Ford GT that looks like a hotwheels car on the road. You couldn't have possibly picked an uglier color scheme for that extremely lame ride. Was your car another attempt at grabbing attention like you so love to do? I would maybe concentrate more on your career and music choices than worrying about what others do with their lives. Nothing like ignorant celebrities to bring a smile to your day. :D Cheers!

  • Way to make people think your ignorant (mayer). Playing Guitar Hero or Rock Band isn't about making people believe they can play the guitar, it's about giving people a simulated feeling of playing one. Most people understand this. Mayer is missing what this does to the people that play it. First and foremost this will make people want to learn to play the guitar. But perhaps more importantly is how by playing these games you learn to appreciate music in a much deeper way than before.

  • It's a *game* so ...yeah, he's right, but in a completely useless way. In comparison, OBVIOUSLY nothing beats John Mayer's lips around my **** but he seems to be settling for Jennifer Maniston's, so ...glass houses, anyone?

  • obviously he hasn't played the game on hard or expert. even though it's not like playing a real guitar, hard and expert mode takes time to do well on the songs. i think putting time and effort into both are up to the person because to be good in guitar hero and real guitar, you gotta give up your time for it.

  • John Mayer has a point. For anyone who plays Guitar Hero, the fun in it is being able to simulate playing a guitar without having the experience or skills to actually do so. It is guitar lite - no need to worry about more than one string or more than two positions. Guitar Hero wouldn't be nearly as popular if it required hours of practice - calluses and everything - to just pick it up and play it. Guitar Hero may be harmless fun, but it is no substitute for real guitar; it can't make music.

  • Uh, it's just a music game. I doubt its fans have anymore interest in playing real guitar than Call of Duty fans have in killing real people. Playing the game is nothing like playing a real guitar and it's not meant to be. It's an entirely different experience and some real guitar players actually suck at it for precisely that reason. It's just a game...for fun, you know? GAME? FUN? I guess that's too difficult to understand...

  • Who cares what John Mayer thinks about Guitar Hero? That guy is just a whiny wussy. Quit complaining about a game that others enjoy! Just because you can play a guitar doesn't make you "special". What this article shows me is that John Mayer is conceited and has an ego problem. I feel bad for the people who fall for his "special" talents. Real fans of "talent" don't care if someone can play the guitar, it's about the kind of person the musician is, his/her personali

  • Look John... Maybe you're upset because none of your songs are featured in the game? Maybe you forgot that it is in fact, a game? Maybe you forgot that you ripped off Dave Matthews? In any case, focus on your own life. I'm sure the game has inspired many a persons to actually pick up a guitar, no doubt. But the bottom line is, it is a game. A video game. Created for the sole purpose of entertainment and not a substitute for the real thing.

  • I completely agree with him and i dont like this article because who ever wrote it didn't even consider having an open mind. Guitar hero is a great example of how lazy America is becoming, instead of learning a real instrument and experiencing the feeling of a real accomplishment people waste their time pretending they have talent. So my advice to you guitar hero fans is pick up a real guitar and maybe this is pushing it but how about you try reading a book for once.

  • Guitar Hero is pure entertainment, and i seriously doubt anyone believes that the game has anything to do with playing a real guitar. - On that he is right though; it has absolutely nothing to do with real guitarplaying, and you won't learn anything about it from playing Guitar Hero. Fun game though ;)

Have you guys ever played real guitar? being a guitarist myself and a gamer i would have to say that, althrough i love both, real guitar is soooo much more rewarding than plastic guitar. mayer is one of the best guitarists who ever lived (and thats not just opinion) whom i have lots of respect for. he just dislikes the game because it can block people from trying to learn guitar for real.

  • Mayer is a big gamer. Anyone who really knows video games has to admit Guitar Hero is a huge rip off. Compared to a real game, a child could create it. The game developers required no skill what-so-ever, and it shoes in their pitiful graphics. Guitar is a fun game, but real guitar IS more satisfying. John is a big Halo fan, so don't tell me he isn't a gamer.

I'm sorry John, but kids and the whole family use it because is fun and nobody says that should be professionals with the guitar-toy (also fun) or maybe you're afraid because people is going to learn how to kick your a** with this motivation?

  • I completely agree, and his statement was taken totally out of context. His comment was in response to people claiming music is easy because they've mastered guitar hero. I'm sure plenty of the people who have already posted know people who are proud they are good at guitar hero or rock band. Playing music on a real instrument helps you appreciate it on a much deeper level than just listening, and having anyone compare the synthetic, plastic experience of a game to real guitar is disturbing.
